Seodaemun prison

Seodaemun Prison Museum

I didn't know this place before one of our guests told me about it. I think it's interesting to visit this place as it tells a big part of Korean history.

It is very easy to find, just get out at Dongnimmun Station (Seoul Subway Line 3), Exit 5.
You'll find the museum right out of the station.

This museum is an old prison where Korean resistant were kept during the Japanese occupation.
In this prison, you can see how Japanese used to torture Korean people and in which conditions they were locked.

The atmosphere is very sad and disturbing. The museum is very well organized. You can even try some of the torturing tools ... Quite troubling.

This is one part of a big room full of the pictures of people who died in this prison

You can also visit the cells, hear some records (big part was in Korean, it's a little bit disappointing because you really want to know more when you get into those rooms)

As a European, I immediately compared this place to the concentration camps I could visit in Germany last year. Honestly, it's very similar and I felt very sorry that I was never taught about Asian history at school. There is no reason why skipping this part of history while our was as horrible as this one.

I felt even more glad that I am traveling the world and get the opportunity to learn by myself.

The entry is only 3000 Won, and it takes maybe 1 hour and half. It's not a big deal in one day !
